How to Have a Catholic Wedding in Italy

Hi everyone, how are you? This topic is one of the most common today when I meet with couples who want a destination wedding in Italy and don’t want to give up a religious ceremony there. It’s a process that involves several steps and several documents, but contrary to what many say, it’s not rocket science. lol! So, if you have the dream of saying “I do” in a religious ceremony in a breathtaking setting in Italy, exchanging rings in a centuries-old church—with the official blessing of the Catholic Church—surrounded by frescoes and history, with the sound of bells echoing through the cobblestone streets, know that it’s possible!

But for everything to happen correctly in both Italy and Brazil, it’s necessary to follow certain steps and gather the documentation required by the Church and the authorities. And this is where many couples start to feel lost: deadlines, translations, contacting parishes, different requirements in each city… The good news? With the right assistance, all of this can be much easier and more relaxed. And since I’m a Brazilian wedding planner with my own team in Italy, everything happens with clear communication, close supervision, and the security of having someone who understands both sides of the process.

What documents are needed to get married in a religious ceremony in Italy?

  1. To have a Catholic wedding in Italy, Brazilian couples must present:
  2. Updated baptismal certificate – recently issued by the parish where the baptism took place, with a note that they are free to marry.
  3. Confirmation certificate – proving that they received the sacrament.
  4. Marriage license certificate – issued by the Brazilian parish after the banns process, with authorization to celebrate the marriage abroad.
  5. Valid passports – for identification.

These documents must be translated by a sworn translator and, in some cases, legalized for use in Italy. Each diocese may have specific requirements, so it’s essential to understand the rules of the curia in the city where the ceremony will take place.

How does the document process for a destination wedding in Italy work?

The first step is for the Brazilian parish to begin the marriage license process. After the documents are issued, they must be sent to the Italian curia responsible for the chosen church. Only after approval by the curia can the date be officially confirmed. This process requires organization and, above all, a good relationship with the churches and local authorities to ensure everything runs smoothly. And my fiancés have this with ease, after all, I’ve performed several religious weddings there.
